VW RCD 510 Radio Codes

VW RCD 510 radio code by serial number, taken from the VWZ label on the radio casing and usually sent by email within 24 hours. The RCD 510 is the touchscreen CD radio in the Golf Mk6, Passat B7, Tiguan and Scirocco from about 2008 to 2015, and this page also covers the RCD 310 from the same years, which has buttons instead of a touchscreen and the same VWZ serial label.

How to find your Volkswagen serial number

The guide below will show you exactly where to find your Volkswagen radio serial number.

Remove your RCD 510
Step 1
Remove your RCD 510
The RCD 510 is a double DIN unit. On most cars it comes out with a pair of radio release keys pushed into the slots on the front panel. If it is held by screws instead, ease off the trim surround first and undo them. Support the unit as it comes forward. You do not need to unplug any wires to read the label.
Find the VWZ serial on the label
Step 2
Find the VWZ serial on the label
The serial is on a sticker on the casing, usually on the top or side. It starts VWZ and is 14 characters long. Most RCD 510 serials start VWZ4Z, for example VWZ4Z7J1234567. Some labels add one extra letter at the end, so type the serial exactly as printed.

The RCD 310 has the same kind of VWZ label.

Note: the capital letter I and the number 1 look almost the same on these labels. Check carefully before entering.

The RCD 310 from the same years has a plain display with buttons instead of a touchscreen, and you find its serial in exactly the same way.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which cars have the RCD 510?
The RCD 510 was a factory touchscreen radio on many Volkswagens from about 2008 to 2015, including the Golf Mk6, Passat B7, Tiguan and Scirocco, and some Polo 6R models. It has a colour touchscreen and a CD player but no satellite navigation. If your unit has navigation, it is more likely an RNS 310 or RNS 510.
I have an RCD 310. Does this page cover it?
Yes. The RCD 310 is from the same generation as the RCD 510, but it has a plain display, buttons and two rotary knobs instead of a touchscreen. It was common on the Golf Mk6, Polo 6R, Touran and Caddy. The method is the same: remove the unit, read the VWZ serial on the casing label and enter it in the box above.
Where is the RCD 510 serial and what does it look like?
It is on a sticker on the metal casing, usually on the top or side, and it is never shown on the touchscreen. It starts VWZ and is 14 characters long, for example VWZ4Z7J1234567. Some labels print one extra letter at the end, so type the serial exactly as you see it. The label also carries a VW part number, which we do not need.
My RCD 510 shows SAFE. How do I get past it?
SAFE appears after the radio loses power and stays until the correct code is entered. If two wrong codes are entered, the RCD 510 locks for about an hour. Leave the ignition and the radio switched on for the full hour, then enter the code. The RCD 310 behaves the same way.
The radio is not the original. Which serial do I use?
Always the serial of the unit fitted now. The code is linked to the radio, not to the car or its VIN. If the RCD 510 came from another car, or the car was upgraded from an RCD 310, a code written in the service book will not match it.
How quickly will I receive the code?
Most RCD 510 and RCD 310 codes reach your inbox within 24 hours of ordering. Volkswagen codes are not issued instantly, because each one is retrieved for your serial. The code is permanent, so file the email somewhere safe for the next battery change.
My unit is not an RCD 510 or RCD 310. Where do I go?
Other Volkswagen radios are unlocked the same way, from the VWZ serial on the casing. The RCD 300 and the RNS navigation units have their own pages, and all other units and models are listed on the Volkswagen radio codes page.
