How to find your Volkswagen serial number

The guide below will show you exactly where to find your Volkswagen radio serial number.

Remove your RCD 300
Step 1
Remove your RCD 300
On most cars the RCD 300 comes out with a pair of radio release keys. Push the keys into the slots on the front panel until they hold, then pull the unit forward by the keys. If your unit is held by screws instead, ease off the trim surround first and undo them. You do not need to unplug any wires. The radio only needs to come out far enough to read the label.
Find the VWZ serial on the label
Step 2
Find the VWZ serial on the label
The serial is on a sticker on the casing, usually on the top or side. It starts VWZ and is 14 characters long. Most RCD 300 serials start VWZ1Z, for example VWZ1Z2H1234567, and the sixth character is always a number.

Copy the line exactly as your label shows it and enter it in the box above.

Note: the capital letter I and the number 1 look almost the same on these labels. Check carefully before entering.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which VW models have the RCD 300?
The RCD 300 was a factory CD radio on many Volkswagens from about 2005 to 2010, including the Golf Mk5, Jetta, Polo, Passat B6, Touran and Caddy. Higher trims of the same cars often had the RCD 500 or an RNS navigation unit instead. You do not need to know the model name to order: the serial tells us exactly which unit you have.
Where is the serial number on an RCD 300?
It is not shown on the screen. It is printed on a label on the metal casing, usually on the top or side, so the radio has to come out of the dash. On most cars a pair of radio release keys go into the slots on the front panel and the unit slides out. You do not need to unplug any wires. The label also shows a VW part number, but we only need the line that starts VWZ.
What does an RCD 300 serial look like?
It is 14 characters long and starts VWZ, for example VWZ1Z2H1234567. Most RCD 300 serials start VWZ1Z, and the sixth character is always a number. The capital letter I and the number 1 look almost the same on these labels, so check each one before you order.
My RCD 300 says SAFE. What should I do?
SAFE means the radio has lost power, for example after a battery change, and it now needs its four digit code. If two wrong codes have already been tried, the RCD 300 locks for about an hour. Leave the ignition and the radio switched on for the full hour, then enter the correct code.
The radio has been replaced. Will the code in my service book still work?
Only if the radio is the original one. The code belongs to the radio, not to the car or its VIN. If your RCD 300 came from another Volkswagen or from a breaker, read the serial on the unit that is fitted now and we will retrieve the code for that unit.
How long does it take to get an RCD 300 code?
Most RCD 300 codes are emailed within 24 hours of ordering. Volkswagen codes are not instant, because each one is retrieved for your serial. Keep the email once it arrives: the code never changes, so the same four digits work after every battery change.
My radio is not an RCD 300. Which page do I need?
Every Volkswagen radio with a VWZ serial is unlocked from the label on its casing. The RCD 510 and the RNS 310 and RNS 510 navigation units have their own pages, and every other unit and model is on the Volkswagen radio codes page.
