How to find your Renault serial number

The guide below will show you exactly where to find your Renault radio serial number.

Enter your 17-character VIN (quickest method)
VIN Code
Enter your 17-character VIN (quickest method)
The fastest way to get your code without touching the radio. Your VIN is printed on the windscreen base plate (visible from outside the car), the driver’s door jam sticker, or in your V5C logbook.

Renault VINs typically start with VF1, 8A1, 93Y or 9FB. Enter all 17 characters in the serial field above.

Your code is delivered instantly provided the VIN entered is correct.

Visteon Van Radio
Renault Van (Visteon)
On the Renault Trafic and Master the quickest way to get your code is the vehicle VIN (step 1 above). That alone unlocks it, with nothing to remove. If you would rather not use the VIN, you can read the numbers from the radio label instead. There is no screen method, so remove the unit (release keys into the four corner holes, slide it forward).

Visteon unit: enter the serial (a barcode, roughly 11 characters, for example 03RAI4I0182) and the part code (the Renault Part Code, starting 281 and ending in R, for example 281152752R).

Renault unit: enter the single security number, or the barcode starting 2811, 8200 or 7700 (for example 281157844RTC109), on its own.
Remove the radio from the dashboard
Radio Removal
Remove the radio from the dashboard
If you cannot use your VIN, the serial number is on a label on the radio unit itself. You will need to remove it from the dashboard.

Older models (Clio I to III, Megane I to II, Scenic I to II, Laguna, Trafic): Insert radio release keys into the four small pinholes at each corner of the fascia. Push inward and apply gentle outward pressure. The unit slides forward. No wires need to be disconnected.

Newer models (Clio IV+, Captur, Scenic III+, Kadjar, ZOE, touchscreen units): Use a trim prying tool to carefully remove the surrounding trim panel, then unscrew the mounting screws and slide the unit forward.
Serial Number
Find the serial number on the label
Your serial number will be in one of these formats:

Letter + 3 digits (e.g. H758, A123). Philips or Blaupunkt unit. Often printed at the end of a longer barcode, in a box labelled "Security", "Pre Code" or "Code".

2811 prefix (e.g. 281150198RTC703). Enter the full number as your serial. Use the boxed number near the bottom of the label, not the part code at the top.

8200 barcode (e.g. 8200607918TJ110). Enter the full barcode number.

7700 barcode (e.g. 7700433948T0540). Enter the full barcode number.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which radios does the Renault Symbol have?
The Symbol is the saloon version of the Clio. The first generation (from about 1999) and the second (from about 2008) use Renault radio units from the same families as the Clio of the same era. The third generation, from about 2013, shares much of its equipment with the Dacia Logan, so it often has a Plug & Radio or a Media Nav touchscreen.
How do I get the code for my Symbol radio?
Enter all 17 characters of the VIN in the box at the top of the page. If the radio is the one the car was built with, the code is returned instantly and sent by email. Renault VINs usually start with VF1, and cars built in South America can start with 93Y or 8A1. The VIN is at the base of the windscreen, on the door pillar sticker and on your registration document.
Where is the serial number on a Symbol radio?
It is on a label on the radio casing, so the radio has to come out. On most first and second generation cars, release keys in the four corner holes slide the unit forward. Look for a precode of one letter and three digits, for example H758, or a barcode starting 8200 or 2811 that ends in the precode. On many older units, holding buttons 1 and 6 with the radio on shows the precode on the display without removing anything. This does not work on the Media Nav, where the precode is only on the label.
My Symbol has a replacement radio. Can I still use the VIN?
No. The VIN only finds the code for the factory radio, because the code belongs to the radio and not the car. For a replacement unit, enter the serial or precode from its label.
Is a Thalia or Clio Symbol the same as a Symbol for the radio code?
Yes. The car was sold under different names in different countries, but the radios and the method are the same. Use the VIN for the original radio, or the label serial for any other radio.
How long does a Symbol radio code take?
VIN codes and precodes are delivered instantly in most cases, on screen and by email. If the VIN is not found straight away, we look it up by hand and email the code as soon as it is found.
The Symbol radio shows a countdown after a wrong code. What should I do?
Leave the radio and the ignition on until the countdown ends, as switching off may restart it. On push button units, buttons 1 to 4 set each digit and holding button 6 confirms. On the Media Nav, type the code on the screen keypad. The Renault radio codes page covers code entry for every other Renault model.
