Use a trim prying tool to release the surround, remove the mounting screws and slide the unit forward. You do not need to disconnect any wires. The radio only needs to come out far enough to read the label on the casing.

Your serial number is on a sticker on the side or rear of the casing. It starts with VWZ and is 14 characters long, for example VWZ1Z2H1234567.

Why does my VW Touareg radio say SAFE?
SAFE is the anti-theft lock mode. It appears when the radio loses power, for example after a flat battery or a battery change, and clears once the correct 4-digit code is entered.
The dealer quoted a diagnostic fee just to look up the code. Is this the same code?
Yes. There is one correct code for your unit and it is derived from the radio serial. We decode the same code from the VWZ label without the diagnostic booking. If you run more than one Volkswagen, the VW radio code page covers every model.
What does the serial number look like?
All VW radio serials begin with VWZ and are 14 characters long, for example VWZ1Z2H1234567. The label is on the side or back of the casing. Watch out for the capital letter I and the digit 1, which look almost identical on these labels.
The radio shows 2 SAFE and will not take the code. What now?
The unit has locked after too many wrong attempts. Leave the radio switched on for about an hour and it will accept the code again. Enter it carefully using the preset buttons.
