The guide below will show you exactly where to find your Volkswagen radio serial number.

Insert radio release keys into the corner slots and apply gentle outward pressure, or use a flat-head screwdriver and prying tool depending on the unit. The radio slides far enough forward to read the label. You do not need to disconnect any wires.

Your serial number is on a sticker on the side or rear of the casing. It starts with VWZ and is 14 characters long, for example VWZ1Z2H1234567.

Why does my VW Fox radio say SAFE?
SAFE is the anti-theft lock mode. It appears when the radio loses power, for example after a flat battery or a battery change, and clears once the correct 4-digit code is entered.
My Fox radio has no screen to speak of. Does the code entry still work the same?
Yes. The code is entered with the preset buttons and the small display shows each digit, the same procedure as every other VW unit of the era. The process is the same for every VW, as explained on the VW radio code page.
What does the serial number look like?
All VW radio serials begin with VWZ and are 14 characters long, for example VWZ1Z2H1234567. The label is on the side or back of the casing. Watch out for the capital letter I and the digit 1, which look almost identical on these labels.
The radio shows 2 SAFE and will not take the code. What now?
The unit has locked after too many wrong attempts. Leave the radio switched on for about an hour and it will accept the code again. Enter it carefully using the preset buttons.
