BMW Radio Code

BMW radios are built by Blaupunkt, Becker, Philips and Alpine, and every one unlocks with a code tied to the radio serial number, not your VIN. Many models can even show the serial on screen without removing the radio. Covers Business, Professional, Bavaria, Reverse and Alpine units.

How to find your BMW serial number

The guide below will show you exactly where to find your BMW radio serial number.

On-screen serial
Check the radio screen first (no removal needed)
Many BMW units, such as the Business and Professional ranges, keep a hidden service menu that shows the short serial number on screen.

Turn the key to the first ignition position. Switch the radio off, then on, and hold the m button for up to 10 seconds. If nothing appears, repeat the process holding the TP button.

Scroll through the service menu until you see the serial number, then enter it above. If your radio has no m or TP button, or no menu appears, use the removal method below.
Or slide the radio out and read the label
Label serial
Or slide the radio out and read the label
Release the radio with removal keys or a prying tool and slide it forward. No wires need to be disconnected.

The serial is on the sticker label on the casing and the prefix tells you who built the unit: BP (Blaupunkt), BE (Becker), PH (Philips) or AL (Alpine). On older units it may be engraved into the metal casing instead.

Enter the full serial including the prefix, for example AL6BDUW0534204.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why is my BMW radio asking for a code?
The radio locked itself when it lost power. A flat battery, a battery change or a garage service are the usual triggers. It is an anti-theft feature and the code is the only way back in.
Can I see the serial on the screen without removing the radio?
On many BMW units, yes. With the key in the first ignition position, switch the radio off then on and hold the m button for up to 10 seconds, or repeat with the TP button. The hidden service menu shows the short serial number. If your unit has no m or TP button you will need to read the label instead.
The dealer gave me a code from my VIN and it did not work. Why?
VIN-based codes assume the original factory radio is still fitted. If the radio has ever been swapped or replaced with a used unit, the VIN code is wrong. Decoding from the radio serial number matches the radio that is actually in the car, so the code is correct every time.
What do the BP, BE, PH and AL prefixes mean?
BMW did not build its own radios. BP is Blaupunkt, BE is Becker, PH is Philips and AL is Alpine. The prefix on your serial simply tells you which company manufactured your unit. We decode all four.
My serial starts with AL. Can you decode Alpine BMW units?
Yes. Alpine units, including the engraved-serial CD-era models, are covered. Enter the full serial exactly as shown, for example AL6BDUW0534204.
Which BMW radios are supported?
The Business and Business RDS/CD ranges, Professional and Professional RDS, the Bavaria C series, Reverse and Reverse RDS, CD43 and most Alpine units, fitted across the 3, 5, 7 and 8 Series, E30 to E46, Z1, Z3, Z4 and M models.
My US BMW asks for a 5-digit code. Is that covered?
US-region radios use a longer code than European units. Order as normal and contact us with your serial if the delivered code needs the US variant. We will make sure you get the right one.
