How to find your Volkswagen serial number

The guide below will show you exactly where to find your Volkswagen radio serial number.

Remove the surrounding trim panels and slide the unit out of the dashboard. Depending on your model you will use a flat-head screwdriver, a prying tool, or radio release keys inserted into the corner slots. You do not need to disconnect any wires. The unit will slide far enough forward to read the label.

Your serial number is on a sticker on the side or rear of the casing. All VW serials start with VWZ and are 14 characters long, for example VWZ1Z2H1234567 or VWZ5Z7L0496236.

Why does my VW radio say SAFE?
SAFE is the anti-theft lock mode. It appears when the radio loses power, for example after a flat battery or a battery change. The radio will not play until the correct 4-digit code is entered. This is a Volkswagen factory security feature.
Do I need to remove my VW radio to find the serial?
Yes. All VW radios require physical removal to access the serial number label. The serial is not displayed on screen. You will need either radio release keys or a flat-head screwdriver and prying tool depending on the model.
What does a VW serial number look like?
All VW radio serials begin with the letters VWZ and are 14 characters long. A typical example is VWZ1Z2H1234567. The label is on the side or back of the radio casing. Be aware that the capital letter I and the digit 1 can look very similar on VW radio labels.
How long does delivery take?

No. Volkswagen radio codes are tied to the radio serial number, not the vehicle VIN. You will need to remove the radio and read the serial from the label on the unit.

The most common cause is misreading the serial, particularly confusing the capital letter I with the number 1. Double-check your serial against the label. If everything looks correct, contact us and we will investigate at no extra charge. All codes are guaranteed.
Do I need to disconnect the battery when removing the radio?
No. You do not need to disconnect the battery or any wires to retrieve the serial number from a VW radio. Simply slide the unit forward, read the label and slide it back in.
Can I get my VW radio code for free?
No website can calculate a VWZ code; the "free calculators" you will find need a memory dump from the opened radio. The dealer looks it up from the VIN with the registration document, and two wrong entries shows SAFE for an hour.
